Obesity is the excess amount of body fat. According to Ayurveda, there are basic elements in the human body known as the seven dhatus. These are present in human body in particular proportions and any change in their equilibrium leads to diseases. In obese persons, meda (fat) is nourished excessively, while other dhatus get malnourished and vata, kapha and pitta (doshas) in the body are out of balance as kapha is accumulated.
The causes of obesity are:
- Not exerting physically or mentally.
- Sleeping in the afternoon.
- The diet and life styles, which cause an increase in the Kapha dosha.
- Consuming sweet foods.
Obese persons are also prone to following:

· Sleeping for fewer hours, avoiding sleeping in afternoons helps to increase the burning of calories.
· Avoiding food and beverages, which increase Kapha and medha, like sweets, sweetened drinks, large quantities of carbohydrates and oily food. Consuming wheat products more than rice products helps to reduce obesity.

Memory Disorders – Yoga

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Ayurvedic medicine, a traditional way of Indian healing system   believes that all the activities are combination of both physic and physical factors and that any illness including memory disorders too involves both of these aspects. Hence it deals with both while treating the same.

Memory is the capacity to retain and then recollect the information about all the past and present situations. Ayurvedic treatment  includes regular yogic practice which helps to flush out the toxins that are blocked in channels. It also increases the circulation of blood to the brain thereby improving the concentration and memory power. It is a  discipline that includes asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques) and dhyana (meditation).

Asanas – The gentle  stretches of body postures when done slowly and with a focused mind cleans the organs of the body and helps in eliminating the trapped toxins from the channels thereby increasing the memory power.  Inverted postures increases the blood supply to brain which aids in enhancing the intellectual powers and also treats the memory disorders. Vrikshasana or the tree pose and Natarajasana or the dancer’s pose helps to improve balance/concentration thereby toning up the memory power.

Pranayama – Breathing techniques helps the mind to focus on the inhale and exhale of our breath and the oxygen or prana (energy) flow is increased in the body and brain.  This leads to concentration and treats all kinds of memory disorders.

Dhyana – It strengthens one’s mind and helps one drastically reduces the unnecessary and irrelevant thoughts and thinking. It helps one to attain calm and a tension free mind. When one meditates on the third eye between the eye brows, the  brain activation and the memory power is increased.

Memory Disorders- Ayurveda concept

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Memory disorder is a state when a person finds it very difficult to store and retrieve the memory of any events or informations. When any person is affected with diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, malnutrition, consumption of alcoholism or brain injury then he might be affected with this disorder.

It can be accepted that each one of us will tend to forget few things from time to time, but it is when it occurs so frequently that it affects the daily activities it can be said that we suffer from memory disorder.

There are different types of memory disorder depending upon its intensity  and it varies from a minor short term memory loss to severe Alzheimer’s disease and the  patient experience so much difficulty in communicating, learning, thinking that it will totally affect their life individually/socially. Anterograde amnesia persons cannot remember the things that had happened in distant past but can very well remember the things which happened an hour ago.

In Ayurveda these states of a patient is called as smruthi nasha, the  main reason is due to the depletion of the tissue elements and when the accumulated excess bio energies moves upward. Manovaha srotas channels is the carrier of impulses whose prime responsibility is memory. When the satva guna (pure and consciousness) is present then the channel is kindled in a positive way. On the other hand when tamaha (darkness of the person - passivity and ignorance) is present then it results in the malfunction of the mental activities including memory loss. Hence one should aim at increasing sattiv guna and get rid of tamasic guna which is the root cause of all mental disorders.

Viral Disease – Panchakarma

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Ayurveda, an age old system of Indian medicine, firmly states that every person who is exposed to the same environment is not affected by viral diseases, hence it is the  immune system that plays an important role in attracting the virus towards him. It suggests a modified diet, lifestyle and herbal formulations along with the panchakarma treatment.

Ayurveda aims at getting rid of the indigestible toxins that attract the virus towards him.
As we are all aware, the immune system is weakened due to accumulation of ama, the toxins in our body and panchakarma therapy which involves the entire body massaging steam saunas with herbs which helps to clear out the blockages and get rid of the foreign invaders like virus out of the body.

Pizhichil, one of the preparatory method for panchakarma is used to fight the chronic fatigue syndrome which a person feels when he has just recovered from the viral diseases. In this process, the medicated oil or milk is being continuously poured on the whole body and simultaneously four therapists give a gentle massage all over the body.. This leads to rejunevation.

It includes Vaman (vomiting), Virechan (medicated purgation) Basti (cleaning the bowels with medicated enemas), Nasya (medication through nasal route), Rakta mokshan (blood-letting).One of these therapies may be used to treat according to the disease one has been diagonised with.

Virus – Ayurvedic Concept

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

According to Ayurveda, an age old Indian natural healing system of medicine, each individual body constitution is made up of tridoshas namely vata, pitta or kapha. Any imbalance in the doshas which is caused by improper lifestyle and diet / stress leads to attract virus towards it.

Virus, a simple submicroscopic parasites of planst and animals,  cannot multiply on their own so they invade a host cell and make more virus particles.  For example sometimes even if one stands near a person who sneezes/coughs or shake hands with people who are infected with virus they get affected by virus. But one cannot avoid contacts with others totally and the best thing is that one can work one himself to boost his own immune system and be with a robust health.

Ayurvedic medicine  is against the common belief that bacteria and viruses are the only causes of diseases. Simple ayurvedic logical reason, why only some are affected, even when all of us are exposed to them is that their immunity system is low.

To guard oneself from attacked by virus one has to have proper diet and avoid wrong eating habits as they lead to a  great disturbances in the digestive system and thereby toxins are formed, which forms a breeding place for infections. This circulates throughout the system where the fight is taking place between the invading virus and the immunity of the body. If one’s immunity system is not so strong then the virus wins.

Ayurveda insists upon a correct way of living which is tailored to suit individual body constitution by clearing the toxins, strengthens the digestive system, normalizes imbalanced doshas thereby building immunity, for which it highly  recommends the natural medicinal herbs, modified life style and dietary changes along with the yogic practice to gain the natural
