Pimples (Acne) -Ayurveda concept

Ayurveda, a prehistoric medical science defines acne as Youvana Pitikas.  It believes that the tridoshas (vata, pitta, kapha) in the form of tissues controls all activities of the body and  aggravated doshas are main reasons in eruption of acne.

Vata when gets vitiated due to unhealthy diet and lifestyles affects other two doshas (kapha and pitta) to aggravate them.

** Aggravated pitta affects rakta dhatu or blood. The vitiated blood affects the skin and causes excess secretion of oil from sebaceous glands. Acne due to a Pitta vitiation are generally red, soft, small and tend to be aggravated in hot weather

** Kapha has sticky property. Aggravated kapha imparts the stickiness to the oil produced by sebaceous glands of skin. Thus the  thick sebaceous plugs are formed in skin pores and hair follicles leading to eruption of acne. The lesions are pale, hard, fairly large, have an oily secretion and tend to aggravate in cold weather

A large number of oil producing glands called “sebaceous glands” are present under the skin. During puberty or menopause due to the influence of the sex hormones, which are produced in male and female, these glands become more active and produce an oily secretion called “sebum”. The sebum makes the skin more oily .The excessive sebum clogs the skin pore or the pit of the hair follicle forming acne.
The blocked pore or acne acts as an excellent habitat for bacteria. The bacterial infection causes inflammation (red, painful swelling of the infected area) of the clogged pore or hair follicle leading to eruption of pimples.

Ayurveda, treats acne by balancing doshas by adopting the modified diet and life styles, herbal tablets, massaging face regularly with herbal oils. Also it helps one has to find constructive ways to let off steam and express their emotions regularly in a calm, honest way which can also be cited as one of the reason for acne.

Pimples- Suggested diet and lifestyle by Ayurveda :

Ayurveda is a non-invasive and complementary way of life that treats acne by  by understanding the body constitution (tri doshas). Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when oil and dead skin cells get trapped in the pit of the hair follicle. Bacteria then begins to multiply and the area becomes inflamed producing pimples, blackheads and whiteheads on the face and upper body

Few tips to modify life style and diet which helps to balance the aggravated doshas and treat acne are :
** A diet high in raw vegetables and fruits to be taken in plenty. Drink at least 15 glasses of water daily.

** All forms of sugar, alcohol, butter, caffeine, cheese, chocolate, cocoa, cream, fat, fried foods, margarine, hydrogenated oils, soft drinks, iodized salt and processed foods, spicy, dry and oily food are to be avoided.

** 15 minutes of sunshine along with a regular exercise regimen and sufficient sleep is recommended.

** Keep a habit of emptying bowels regularly.

** Avoid exposure of skin to severe climatic conditions.

** When makeup must be worn, use water-based, hypoallergenic products without harsh chemicals, dyes or oils.

** Neem acts as a deep cleanser and also improves your skin elasticity, and helpful in acne scar treatment.

** The face should be kept free from oil by washing with an herbal cleanser or with lemon juice three times per day.

** Hair should be kept clean, as well. Friction makes pimples more likely to erupt, so not over-scrub or touch the affected area whenever possible.

** Put a hair band to avoid falling of hair on face. The sweat and dirt accumulated on hair may fall on facial skin through hair strands

** Ayurveda suggests meditation and yoga to balance the spiritual aspect as well as your emotions which reduces the stress levels so that the occurrence of acne may be prevented.

Pimples – Ayurvedic Medicine

Ayurveda ‘the science of Healing’ definitely have a solution for acne. The pathology of the disease is considered due to vitiated Blood (Rakta Dushti) along with vitiated Kapha and Vata and it deals with the diseases by applying various Medical, Surgical and Parasurgical methods of treatment.

** Blood letting is a well-accepted treatment for Vitiated Rakta Dosha, the process of removing this stagnated blood i.e. Raktamokshan  proves significant to treat the disease.

** Leech application for Raktamokshan is one of the Para surgical methods described by Sushruta. It improves microcirculation to tissues by removing this stagnated and vitiated blood.

** Hirudotherapy  improves capillary tissue perfusion and thus supplying proper levels of Oxygen and Nourishment to skin.

** Similarly, the Sheet and Madhur properties of Jalauka (Leech) calms down the provoked Rakta resulting into resolution of the disease.  Better results can be obtained with supplementation of internal medicine and local application of Lepa (Face pack).

** Face pack made up of Lodhra(Symlocos racemosus), Vacha(Acorus Calamus), and smooth paste of Jatiphala(Myristica Fragrance) helps to remove black spots of remnants of acne.

** Blood purifiers like Sariva(Hemidesmus Indicus), Anantmula(Tylophora Asthmatica) are used for internal medication.

** Digestive formula –  Cumin, Coriander, Fennel, Turmeric (equal parts organic powders). ½ tsp taken during meals (2-3 x per day) in a small glass of warm water along with 1 tsp of Ghee.

** Ayurvedic formula – Triphala can be taken 1-2 grams per day at bedtime in a little glass of warm water

** Applying the pastes of the fenu greek leaves , tender neem leaves with turmeric, face pack of ripe tomato pulp or besan flour (gram flour) with rose water on acne and then wash it off after it dries.

** Take time out of every day to relax — read a book, take a bath, practice yoga, or do whatever makes you feel happy and calm this indirectly contributes to health of your skin.

Ayurvedic line of treatment gives  significant result in management of acne  and is very beneficial to society by relieving the physical and psychological upset which is caused by this disease.

Acidity and Digestive disorders – Ayurveda medicine

According to Ayurveda, a holistic medical science, acidity if left unattended may cause many digestive disorders like nausea, vomiting ulcers and constipation.

To buy medicine for acidity click here!

In Ayurveda all diseased states including acidity arise as a result of ama (toxins) and all ama is the result of an improperly functioning agni (digestive fire). In fact the key to a healthy agni is the intake of easily digested, fresh, lightly cooked, compatible foods eaten consciously at the appropriate time.

Ayurvedic treatment of herbal preparations like Indukantam qwath tablet, aptizoom  syrup, indukantam ghrit, hinguvachadi tab, dadimashtaka churna, chitrakadi  tablet, kalyana gulam, dasmoola haritaki leha,  along with modified life style helps to fight acidity and digestive disorders by

a)  Allowing extra pitta to move downward and pass out through bowels that is natural way to balance vitiated pitta : It stimulates digestive fire, softens the stools and cleanses waste products and makes digestive tract free from acid disorders.

b)  Helping the stomach acid to activate digestive enzymes that break down food into small particles for absorption and brings back it to a normal levels to keep the digestive system free of bacteria and parasites.

c)  Achieving the right balances in body metabolism : very hot or very cold food stuffs and beverages are not be taken as these extremes cause build-ups of acidity in the digestive system.

d) Taking internal Ayurvedic standardized Medicinal herbal extract which are  free from adversities.

e) Helping in relieving heart burn by overcoming abdominal and epigastric discomfort by neutralizing acid secretion.  It is an effective remedy for ulcers also.

f) By taking a combination of eight well tested ingredients, which have effective antiacid properties, it minimizes hyper excitability of vagus nerve and also relieves stress and anxiety, as it is believed that there  are more nerve endings in the stomach than in the human brain – which makes the stomach a uniquely vulnerable organ when it comes to non-physical stress affecting the physical body.

Digestive disorders – Yoga management

According to Ayurveda, a  Science of life, the most common digestive disorders like irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, indigestion, acidity, sluggish metabolism, diabetes, chronic tiredness can be controlled by a regular yogic practice. It believes that Agni (digestive fire) is the  chief protector of the body and ama is the real cause of the disease

Yoga postures tone every area of the body including digestive system  and cleanse the internal organs of toxins. It also dissolves physical stress and calms the mind thereby rejuvenating the body which leads to an improved digestion.

Yoga balances all three doshas, and different poses have different effects. Forward bending postures cool Pitta dosha. Twists are good for Kapha because they stimulate digestion. Backward bends are heating, and thus balancing to Vata types, as long as the person has the strength to do them.

** One of the digestive benefits of yoga is that it restricts the blood flow to certain parts of the body while holding some poses. Once these poses are released, this area of the body is then flooded with blood and thus, oxygen. Oxygen has healing properties and is necessary for proper function of the digestive organs.

** Forward bends increase the space in the abdomen and facilitate the release of entrapped gases. These poses heat the front of the body and cool the back body.

** Regular focused breathing can also open up blocked areas of energy in the body- blocked energy, or chi, in the stomach/intestines, is often the cause of digestive problems.

** Yoga calms us, which in turn relaxes the digestive system and leads to more effective elimination.

** Several asanas like  cobra, Hero, Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose), Supported Supta Sukhasana, and an upright variation of Parsvottanasana (Side Stretch Pose) and Dhanurasana are practiced to treat digestive disorders. Some of these poses makes you put entire weight on  stomach, thus tones stomach muscles and makes these stronger as well as to digest food better and cleanse system of left over food, etc

** The commonly used ayurvedic medicine to fight digestive disorders are Indukantam qwath tablet, aptizoom  syrup, indukantam ghrit, hinguvachadi tab, dadimashtaka churna, chitrakadi tablet, kalyana gulam, dasmoola haritaki leha.

Digestive/Acidity disorders – Ayurveda concept

The concept of Acidity and Digestive Disorders in Ayurveda

Ayurveda believes that digestive disorders occur due to inappropriate food and lifestyle.  It offers a rational and scientific approach for determining correct diet which is based upon an individual’s constitution. Vata, Pitta and Kapha ( tri-dosha – energy)  This energetic constitution is the basis of determining which foods are best for maintaining physiological balance for a given individual.

Nutritional imbalances which leads to digestive disorders are :
** Quantitative deficiency – under nutrition due to insufficient food, and even starvation.
** Quantitative excess – excessive amounts of both health foods and even water.
** Qualitative deficiency –  wrong food combination which results in malnutrition, toxic condition and lack of essential nutrients.
** Qualitative excess –  emotional overeating of high fat foods which can result in obesity.
** Ama-producing – certain food combinations lead to toxemia and to certain digestive disorders.
** Prakriti –  foods not appropriate for one’s constitution may reduce immunity and cause disease.

According to Ayurveda, every food has its own taste (rasa), a heating or cooling energy (virya) and post-digestive effect (vipaka). When two or three different food substances of different taste, energy and post-digestive effect are combined together agni can become overloaded inhibiting the enzyme system and resulting in production of toxins in the system.  Combining foods improperly can result in digestive disorders like  indigestion, fermentation, putrefaction and gas formation. For example, eating bananas with milk can diminish agni, change the intestinal flora producing toxins and may cause digestive disorders.

Lack of proper and systematic lifestyle also leads to chain of reactions caused by digestive system’s inability to cope up with irregular food habits added by agonies and worries. Ayurveda manages these  digestive problems through balancing the doshas with the help of food and lifestyle choices.

Acidity – Life style

Our hectic lifestyle takes a toll on our health and we often feel a burning sensation in your stomach and chest i.e, acidity. Ayurveda believes that characteristics of Pitta include acidity so by following qualities that are opposite to pitta  in diet and lifestyle help restore balance to Pitta dosha. And also it states that Agni (digestive fire) is the main protector of the body and ama (toxic) is the real cause of this disease. The below are the lifestyle recommendations to fight acidity.

General :
* *  Stay cool–both physically and emotionally. Avoid going out in the heat of the day, especially on an empty stomach or after you have eaten tangy or spicy foods.
** Delaying meals can cause excess acidity, so eat on time every day. Do not skip meals, do not fast and do not wait to eat until you are ravenously hungry.
** It is important to get to bed early, so that you can get adequate rest each night. A cup of warm milk, with some cardamom, can be helpful before bedtime.
** Daily elimination is very important to prevent ama from accumulating in the body.
** Indulge in an ayurvedic massage every morning before you bathe or shower.
** Protect yourself from the heat. Stay cool in warm weather by wearing loose cotton clothing.
** Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect your eyes when you go out. Drink lots of room temperature water.
** Balance work and play. Set aside some time for Recreation everyday.

Diet :
** Start your day with cooked fruit, followed by some cereal. Eat a sustaining meal at lunch, and a lighter meal for dinner. Avoid food that has acidity and take foods rich in alkaline content.

Exercise & Yoga  :
** Water-based activities are ideal exercise for Pitta-dominant people  Avoid exercising when it is too hot.

Emotional  and  Spiritual  Life  :
** Set aside about 30 minutes each day for meditation, to help balance the heart and emotions and to enhance body-mind-spirit coordination thereby treats acidity at its root.

Ayurvedic herbal preparations like Indukantam qwath tablet, aptizoom  syrup, indukantam ghrit, hinguvachadi tab, dadimashtaka churna, chitrakadi tablet, kalyana gulam, dasmoola haritaki leha is to be taken along with the above mentioned life style suggestions.

Acidity- Ayurveda suggestions

According to Ayurveda, a medical science, acidity, a condition in which there is an excess secretion of acid within the stomach is recognized as Amalapitta. Agni (digestive fire) is known to be the  chief protector of the body and ama(toxic) is the real cause of the disease. The main reason is the indiscretion in taking food which incorporates its quality, quantity and timing, which leads to three types of doshic (physical energies) imbalance : one due to the intervention of vata, another due to kapha and the third one is attributed to the involvement of both of them.

Following guidelines along with the Ayurvedic herbal preparations like Indukantam qwath tablet, aptizoom  syrup, indukantam ghrit, hinguvachadi tab, dadimashtaka churna, chitrakadi tablet, kalyana gulam, dasmoola haritaki leha is suggested :

  •  Foods that are rich in oils and fats, having acidic contents to be avoided.
  •  Smoking, Intake of coffee and tea are to be avoided.
  •  Immediately after eating one should avoid drinking water
  •  Fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and pulses which are good sources of fibre and which helps in digestion to be taken in plenty.
  • Aniseed croomy (Saunf) and Coriander seed (500 mg) to be taken twice a day.
  • Lemon water with equal amount of sugar and salt to be taken everyday.
  • Koshna Jal (Luke warm) water  should be drunk after 1/2 hour.
  • Diet to be reduced to 3/4 th of regular diet
  • Some sort of exercises to be done after a meal.
  • One has to keep himself balanced as psychological reasons like anger, grief, anxiety and depression as potential reasons to trigger the onset of acidity.

Infertility – Ayurveda concept

According to Ayurveda, conception takes place due to healthy sperm, healthy ovum and a healthy uterus. For both men and women, reproductive health depends on the health of the shukra dhatu, or reproductive tissue. In women the shukra tissue creates the ovum as part of the monthly cycle, and in men the semen is formed due to sexual stimulation. The shukra tissue itself is created as part of a long chain of metabolic transformations, starting with the digestion of food and including the transformation of food to nutrient fluid, blood, muscle, fat, bone, bone marrow and finally, to shukra tissue. Healthy shukra tissue, then, according to ayurveda, depends on the health of all the other tissues in the body.

The main causes for infertility according to Ayurveda are eating spicy, salty and hot food  that increase pitta and destroys shukra (semen), overindulgence in sexual activities that leads to shukra kshaya (loss of semen) it may also cause clibya (impotency),  controlling sexual urges for longer duration that results in  veeryaavarodha (Obstruction of semen) and leads to decreased libido. In some cases impotency is acquired by birth also.

Ayurvedic treatment for infertility :
** Body Constitution of both the partners are to be evaluated and any blockages are to be cleared and weakness to be tonified.
**Women to stay relaxed as when tensed the fallopian tubes, the blood vessels nourishing the uterus can be constricted, which is not conducive for conceiving.
** Men to avoid alcohol and smoking, reduce poor quality fats in the diet, and increase exercise.
** Yogasanas like Padmasana increases blood flow to the perineum and directs prana  (life force) to the lower two chakras that govern sexual functions.
** Ayurvedic herbs such as Gokshura (Tribulis terrestris), Guduchi (Tinosporia cordifolia) and Triphala are very much to clear the blockage  Shatavari (Asparagus racemosa) is a rejuvenative tonic for women. Kapikacchu (Mucuna pruriens) is a proven medicine for increasing the sperm and defective sperm formation.

Ayurvedic Concept of Sexual Rejuvenation

Ayurveda recognises the importance of a full and active life which facilitates the fulfilment of one’s duties. According to Charaka, the ancient Ayurvedic teacher, even saints and holy men of yore found that their long stay in the plains as mendicants had sapped their vitality. Therefore they sought refuge in the Himalayas where Indra gave them the secret of rejuvenation therapy.

What is Rejuvenation Therapy?

Rejuvenation therapy is known in Ayurveda as Rasayana chikitsa. It seeks to ward off decay and debilitation through a mix of massages, medicines and right conduct. The treatment is indicated for two types of patients: those who have become debilitated prematurely through dissipation and bad habits; and those who are ageing naturally but would like to ward off the physical manifestations of old age.

Sexual Rejuvenation

This treatment is known in Ayurveda as Vajeekarana or enhancement of sexual prowess. This is resorted to in case of patients who, though young, have become impotent due to natural causes or due to excessive indulgence; those who have lost their normal sexual urge or those who suffer from the effects of venereal diseases.

Semen is considered as one of the seven vital elements of the body. Ayurveda considers semen as the source of physical beauty, energy, intelligence and physical strength. Loss of semen due to over-indulgence or other reasons can lead to severe illnesses including loss of memory, depression and physical weakness.

Ayurveda has very potent and time tested medicines for sexual rejuvenation such as Dasamoolarishta, Aswagandharishta, Saraswatarishta, Sidhamakaradhwajam, Narasimha rasyana etc. Body massage, including Njavarakkizhi and dhara are also indicated in persons who are physically weak. Such treatment should, however, be taken on the advice of experts in Ayurveda.

Vajikarna and infertility

For the convience, the ayurveda has been divided in to eight branches. The different aspects of the life are well addressed by these branches. The wholistic approach of the ancient wisdom is well appreciated in this division. Kayachikitsa, Shalya Tantra, Shalakya Tantra, Kaumara-Bhritya, Bhuta-vidya, Agada – tantra, Rasayana-tantra and Vajikarana are the eight divisions.

Vajikarana is the science dealing with the promotion of sexual health and the management of seminal disorders and male sexual disorders. It also describes the means for health progeny.
Basic aim of the therapy is to procreate healthy progeny and to increase sexual potency in man. Specific drugs are mentioned to improve sexual vigour, sperm motility and sperm count. Generally all kapha increasing drugs act as vajikarna. Examples
Yasti madhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra),Atma gupta (Mucuna pruriens),Jati phala (Myristica fragrans), Masha (Phaseolus mungo),Aswagandha (Withania somnifera),Satavari (Asparagus racemosus). Abhayanga (oil massage), satvavajaya (positive mind) can also act like Vajikarana.
Functions of Sukra dhatu ( Sperm)
1. Beejartham/Garbhothpadanam – Fertility/ to initiate conception.
2. Harsha – Libido or sexual desire.
3. Deha balam – Strength of the body to withstand adverse extrinsic and intrinsic conditions.
4. Preethi – Fondness or Attraction towards opposite sex.
5. Cyavana – Sensation of proper ejaculation and orgasm.
6. Dhairya – Boldness.
7. Sukra Niskramana – Ejaculation.

Eight factors mentioned by Charaka acharya, which contribute to the process of ejaculation, are:
Harsha (Libido), Tarsha (patio or desire for ladies), Saratva (mobility of sukra), Dravatva (fluidity of sukra), Paicchillya (Slimness or viscidity of sukra), Gaurava (heaviness or gravity of sukra), Anu pravana bhava (Tendency to flow down due to property of atomicity), Mruta drutatva – propulsion by apanavayu.
Infertility
Definition:

Female Infertility
The descriptions about female reproductive disorders have been dealt in the chapters of Stri roga in Ashtanga hridaya, Charak samhita, Susrutha samhita, Sarnghadhara samhita and Ashtang samgraha.
Acarya Susruta describes the psychological changes that occur during the act of sexual intercourse. During contact, teja (fire) is produced. This teja stimulates vatodirana (movement of air element). Teja along with vata causes secretion of sukra. Sukra( sperm) travels to yoni and unites with artava (ovum). The resulting product of union of Agni and Soma (zygote) then travels to garbhasaya and grows as garbha.

Factors of conception
Ritu, kshetra, ambu, bija are the chief factors of conception
Ritu – phase of kapha denoting proliferative phase in the uterus followed by ovulation.
Kshetra – denotes healthy female genital tract which will facilitate the entry of sperm.
Ambu – nutritional elements and hormones.
Bija – Ovum and sperm.

Disorders of conception factors
Disorders of Ritukala
Rtukala is a period of kapha pitta predominance. If it is affected by vata or pitta, sub fertility may result.
Disorders of kshetra (female genital tract)
Margavarodha (Obstruction in fallopian tubes), Vyapanna yoni / garbhasaya (Uterine, cervical or vaginal pathology causing hostility to spermatozoa).
Disorders of Ambu (nutritional fluids)
Garbhasravi or amniotic fluid problems, nutritional insufficiency
Disorders of Bija (Ovum or sperm)
Artava dosa or sukra dosa can cause sub fertility
Disorders of maithuna (Intercourse)
Maithuna asahatva (Dyspareunia – painful intercourse), Maithuna aniccha (Psychological disturbances causing frigidity), Asamyak maithuna (Improper intercourse).

Management of Female infertility
1. Sodhana (Purification therapy).
2.  Samana (Pacification therapy).
3.  Utility of specific medicines.
4.  Medicated ghees and oils.
Narayana tailam, satapuspa tailam, phala sarpis, kalyanaka ghrta, dadimadi ghrta, kalyana gulam are commonly used. Ushna, kaphavatahara treatment is given for cystic ovarian disease (PCOS).

Food allergy – Ayurveda

Ayurveda, an ancient Indian medical system, offers a scientific approach to food allergy by determining the correct diet based upon an individual’s constitution ( vata, pitta, kapha) & seasonal alterations.

Pitta people are allergic to hot, spicy foods, fermented foods, sour fruits, tomatoes, potatoes. Kaphas develop allergies to dairy products and cold beverages. Vatas are allergic to hard-to-digest foods such as popcorn, beans and raw vegetables.

When foods, (proteins, carbohydrates and fats) having different attributes, tastes, heating or cooling properties, and post-digestive effects are eaten together, agni (gastric fire) will be slowed down. The foods can then remain in the stomach for seven to eight hours. These same foods, if eaten separately might well stimulate agni, be digested more quickly and even help to burn ama (toxins)

Thus, according to Ayurveda, one should eat according to one’s constitution and take fruits, starches, proteins and fats separately at different times of the day. Combining foods improperly can produce indigestion, fermentation, putrefaction and gas formation. This condition, if prolonged, can lead to toxemia and disease complex. For example, eating bananas with milk can diminish agni, change the intestinal flora producing toxins and may cause respiratory allergies

Symptoms of food allergy include diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, swelling of lips, tongue, abdominal cramps, cough wheezing, sneezing, runny nose, blocked nose and rashes on skin.

Food allergy can be managed by :

** Avoiding the foods which cause allergic reactions.
** Having  a regular routine of life as it stabilizes the immune system
** Practicing yoga and meditation as it balances mind & body thereby reducing allergic symptoms.
** Taking a balanced diet with enough proteins, calories, minerals and vitamins.
** Selecting food with suits the individual constitution and seasons.
** Combining the foods to improve tolerance. Diet should be made wholesome by appropriate combination of different foods.
** Combining the foods to reduce intolerance. The suitability of food is improved by appropriate processing.
** Slowly adapting to the unsuitable food.
** Ayurvedic herbal preparations –  Rasayanas are traditionally used in treating food allergies.

Allergies – Ayurvedic management

Ayurvedic Concept of Allergies

Ayurveda, an ancient Indian medical system  maintains that although allergens such as pollen, dust, and dander trigger symptoms in susceptible people, they are not the primary cause of allergies instead it  is  the accumulation of  ama (toxic) and low immunity.

  1. Ayurveda  emphasis that the improperly digested foods (ama), and impurities, such as chemical additives, are absorbed into the body, travel through the circulation and lodge in the respiratory tissues, skin and other tissues prone to allergy. These accumulated wastes and toxins block the channels, trapping the toxins inside the tissues, and activating the immune system.
** When this toxics material interact with the Skin, they can cause rashes, itching, burning sensations and discoloration.
** If the respiratory tract is involved, sneezing, inflammation and mucous drainage will occur.
** If the tissue involved is the digestive tract, diarrhea can result.
  2. The qualities that predominate and the season or conditions that bring on or worsen the allergy reveal the doshas that are involved. Determining the dominant aggravated dosha helps in the creation of an individual-specific treatment plan.                                                                                                                                                                                – Vata type allergies may present with symptoms of dry cough with dry phlegm, headaches, anxiety, insomnia, and irregular digestion and elimination, and will likely worsen in dry or windy environments and in the fall season.
    – Pitta type allergies will show up as heated symptoms such as burning eyes, rashes, loose stool, and irritation and may get worse in hot environments and the summer time.
    – Kapha, being moist, dull, and heavy, will have the most abundant clear or cloudy mucous production and sluggish digestion, and will worsen in the spring time as the weather warms up and the accumulated kapha from the winter begins to “melt.”

From an Ayurvedic perspective, allergies, as with any condition, reflect a unique situation in each person’s array of symptoms and underlying imbalances and its  allergy treatment will emphasize on the four steps: boost the digestive fire, adjust the diet to support a “clean burn,” detoxify, and restore the strength of the immune system.

How to Manage Allergies through Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda an ancient healing system, one develops allergies when ojas (life force) is depleted & when the immune system is weakened.  High quality ojas  is primarily built from  proper digestion of wholesome foods, and is depleted through stress, lack of rest, toxic foods, irregular eating habits and routines & turbulent emotions. Ayurvedic management of allergies includes :

a) Diet, Nutrition and Digestion – Allergies can be aggravated through improper diet. Foods that can be easily digested, creating nutrients that are then assimilated into the tissues to rebuild their strength is  recommended. Prepare foods in ways that create maximum nourishment for the body.

b) Stress Management and Improved Emotional Function-Allergies are worsened by heightened stress and mental fatigue. Sleep disturbance that is often created by symptoms of allergies increases fatigue, which in turn increases one’s susceptibility to stress, which in turn aggravates the allergy condition. Meditation relieves the stress component of allergies.

c) Ayurvedic Herbs -Appropriate herbal formulas is advised for aiding the healing process, strengthening digestion and helping the body purify itself.

d) Herbalized Oil Massage – Daily oil massage creates heat and friction which enhance circulation and help cleanse the areas of chemical impurities that could be causing symptoms of allergies.

e) Cleansing therapies – Treatment program of massage, application of herbalized preparations and mild internal cleansing therapies like panchakarma is the cornerstone of ayurvedic treatment.

Thus, Ayurveda is an integrated approach to allergy as it eliminates toxin buildup, stabilize the nervous system, enliven the healing ability of the body and manage stress and thereby strikes the allergy at its root.

How Yoga and Lifestyle helps you to cure Allergies

Ayurveda, an integrated system of medicine emphasis on an ideal life style based on yoga which helps to remove stress and leads to relaxation which are extremely effective in reducing the allergy symptoms by tempering the immune system’s response to the offender.

a)  Practicing  yoga posture in a relaxing way with slow deep breathing relaxes the nervous system is beneficial in fighting allergies. ** Kapalabhati breathing is great for allergies as it forces out the mucus. ** Standing poses—forward and backward bends, and twists tends to massage various parts of the spine and the thoracic cage and condition the lungs.

b)  Lifestyle to be changed if one has a stressful job or home life. Meditation and relaxation techniques calms the nerves and loosen up muscles and treats allergy.

c)  Few guidelines for managing allergy are :

** Allergies aggravates when routine of life is hectic, so one should have a regular routine of life.   ** Do yoga postures which strengthen the body’s natural resistance and helps the body block toxic reactions and strengthens the liver, which boosts the immunity.
** Ayuvedic herbal preparations can be very beneficial, and  some of the most promising  anti-allergy herbs include: turmeric, Picrorhiza kurroa, Tinospora cordifolia, and Triphala. Taking Triphala helps “keep the colon clean,” which reduces the buildup of improperly digested food remains, and their associated toxins.
** Include detoxifying spices in your daily diet like turmeric  which has anti-allergy, immune-balancing effects.
**  Go to bed by 10:00 P.M as between 10 PM and 2 AM, the body performs a natural cycle of internal cleansing.
** Eat the largest meal when you are most capable of digesting it i.e, between 12.00 and 1.00 pm.
**  Cold drinks, ice cream, frozen yogurt and other cold foods are to be avoided
** Avoid eating heavy evening meals, particularly after 7 PM.
** Avoid excessively hot spices, sour and acidic foods.
** Drinking alcohol or coffee should be stopped.
** Cleanse the body before the allergy season.

Needless to say, Ayurveda is an alternative therapy which helps to lead a healthy balanced life and is an effective way of treatment for allergy.

Diabetes – Ayurvedic view

Buy AIMIL India BGR- 34 Here!

According to Ayurveda, a holistic alternative medical science, the main cause of diabetes are fat, urine, and Kapha buildups due to foods, liquids, lifestyle, stress and others

It generally believes that any disease caused is due to doshic imbalance. The doshas are the three humors that govern the human body, they are vata, pitta and kapha. It includes diabetes in the prameha category, which are a list of urinary disorders especially characterized by profuse urination with several abnormal qualities.

Classical Ayurvedic therapy for madhumeha (diabetes) begins with an assessment of the dosha imbalance. In all types of pramehas (urinary disorders), kapha is vitiated, but in madhumeha, vata is often aggravated as well. Therefore, therapies will be directed at both vata and kapha simultaneously to restore the balance of the doshas.

By determining the causal imbalances at the basis of a disorder, an Ayurveda evaluation strikes the root causes of diabetes which are Overeating and consequent obesity, Excessive intake of sugar and refined carbohydrates, Overloading of proteins and fats which get converted into sugar if taken in excess, Excessive tension, worry, anxiety & grief, Hereditary factors.

Common ayurveda remedies include :
a) Diet restrictions -Avoid foods that increase kapha dosha like potatoes, rice, sugar, fatty foods and avoiding alcohol.
b) Exercise – Regular physical exercise  is a must for diabetics. Practising yogic asanas like ‘Halasan’, ‘Paschimottanasan” are found effective.
c) Panchakarma Therapy – The greatest benefit of Panchakarma is that it reduces the insulin resistance in the tissues in diabetics which is the primary goal in treating the diabetes.

i.e., Ayurveda also addresses the diet modification by eliminating sugar and simple carbohydrates, and emphasizing complex carbohydrates. Protein is limited, as excessive intake can damage the kidneys. Fat is also limited because there is often a deficiency of pancreatic enzymes, making fat digestion difficult. Since many diabetics have autoantibodies,  Panchakarma is typically used for this cleansing the same. This begins with herbal massages and an herbal steam sauna, followed by fasting to cleanse the body. This is followed by an herbal purge for the liver, pancreas, and spleen. Colon therapy is next, first to cleanse the digestive tract and then to reconstitute the system.

Diabetes- Life style modification

Ayurveda is the ‘Way of Life’ which addresses all the problems under the category of Lifestyle Diseases with time-tested methodologies.

Whatever sugar we take is generally broken down into simple sugar called ‘glucose’ in our body. This glucose circulates within the blood and enter into  the cells with the help of insulin. Insulin is a hormone, made within the Beta-cells of Pancreas. Due to sedentary life style and genetic predisposition, the beta cells are not able to make enough insulin, which is a key for glucose to enter into the cells. The key is not there and the glucose keeps on circulating within the blood. This is called Diabetes. .

Ayurveda treats the “whole person” and enable better successful  management of diabetes by taking care about their  psycho-social aspects faced by persons with diabetes too. Controlling Diabetes means reverting to a healthier lifestyle as below :

** Diet – Avoid sugar in any form-rice, potato, banana, cereals & fruits containing high percentage of sugar content.  Do away with fatty stuff. Go for the following low-calorie, low-fat alkaline diet of high quality natural foods. Emphasis should be on raw vegetables & herbs as they play a part in stimulating the pancreas and enhancing insulin production.

** Exercise – Shun a sedentary lifestyle. Exercise helps in burning fat, reducing stress and reducing weight. These are key ingredients of diabetes control. Cycling, swimming, jogging etc are helpful to fight diabetics.

** Yoga – Daily yoga routine of breathing exercises, meditation and poses  enhance digestion and help the pancreas and liver function more normally, regulating blood sugar levels. Cobra (Bhujang Asana) Locust (Shalabh Asana) Bow (Dhanur Asana)  are few asanas that help diabetics.

** Quit Smoking – if you smoke your body also is unable to respond to insulin. Smoking while having diabetes also increases your risk of getting complications such as eye, kidney and nerve problems.

** Reduce Alcohol Consumption – Many alcoholic drinks contain sugar. Excessive alcohol can decrease your blood sugar to dangerous levels.

** Occupation : Certain occupations like being a pilot, armed forces, deep sea diving and working on a ship are not advisable for persons with diabetes.

**  Don’t indulge in day-time sleep.

Obesity and Diabetes

In Ayurveda, Science of life, Obesity is known as Medo Roga and is defined as the condition in which excessive amount of fat is accumulated in the body. Itholds that when the agni, the digestive fire is vitiated, then the ama (toxic substances) is built up in the body, leading to obesity.
.
** In Ayurvedic theory, the body is said to contain three primal forces (tridosha) that work in tandem: vata, pitta and kapha. Excess kapha is said to cause obesity which increases the chances of getting Diabetes.** Generally Type 1 diabetes are completely unable to produce insulin whereas  Type 2 diabetes can produce insulin, but their cells have become resistant to it.

Besides sugar utilization, Insulin is required for fat deposition in the body. In obese people, an ‘Insulin steal’ occurs : the fat ‘steals’ the Insulin from other cells, setting the stage for Diabetes. Thus the link between type 2 diabetes and obesity is firmly established. Without the intervention of a healthy diet and appropriate exercise, change in the sedentary life style in order to lower the elevated blood glucose level, obesity may develop into diabetes over a relatively short period of time.

The excessive fat interferes with body’s ability to use insulin properly. According to Ayurveda this is called ” Stroto-avarodh” i.e. blocked channels. This blockage in the channels of passage of insulin is reason for greater insulin resistance.

And following are the ayurvedic tips to fight obesity thereby prevents diabetes :
** Exercises like brisk walking, jogging, out door games etc help to reduce weight.
** Avoid taking curd the food and beverages which increase kapha and medha.
** Having sex frequently is also a good physical exertion
** Consume wheat products than rice products.
** Physical and mental exertion..
** Sleeping for less hours.

If the person is obese, then diabetes becomes more of a problem. In such people, an elaborate Ayurvedic system of treatment is used. The preliminary methods are a) Apatarpana (de-nourishment) and  b) Shamshodhana (cleansing)
In these methods, the fats built up in the body are reduced by de-nourishment of the body. This is followed by a cleansing of the toxins that have accumulated in the body. The Panchakarma method of cleansing the body may be used. Once this is done, then the body has to be rebuilt.

Diabetes and Yoga

Yoga is a  way of living that has a beneficial effect on diabetes, which is a lifestyle related condition due to an imbalance in handling a glucose load. It is a state in which pancreas not functions normally, no sufficient insulin is produced and so, the body is not capable to manage its food intake properly, body’s metabolism gets disturbed.

The yogic treatment like  Asanas (poses), Pranayama (breathing techniques), and Dhyana (meditation) restores the normal functioning of the pancreas and other glands of the endocrinal system. When these glands begin to function properly, the body chemistry becomes normal, the individual is fully cured of the diabetic disorders and his health is restored to normal level.

a)  Asanas :
** Yogic exercises enhance digestion and help the pancreas and liver function more normally, regulating blood sugar levels
** Asanas like Sasangasana (Rabbit Pose) and Janushirasana with Pashimotthanasana (Head-to-Knee with Stretching Pose) provide stimulation and rejuvenation to the cells of the pancreas and other endocrine glands by way of compression. Compression of these glands, followed by relaxation, causes an increased volume of highly oxygenated blood to reach the cells, bringing nourishment that rejuvenates atrophied cells.
**  The calmative effects by the practice of Savasana (Dead Body Pose) at correct intervals also contributes to the reversal of this so-called chronic, incurable disease.

b) Pranayama :
** It  reduces the drug requirement, develops a sense of well-being and normalization of  the insulin / Glucose ratios.
**  Alternate nostril breathing has calming effect on nervous system, which reduces stress levels, helping in diabetes treatment.

c) Dhyana :
** Stress hormones increase sugar levels in the blood. By  regular meditation one can manage stress by bringing balance between Sympathetic and Parasympathetic nervous systems.
** Concentration on pancreas during the meditation practice has shown positive effects on sugar levels.
** It results in a stabilization of moods and increases a feeling of being more in control  which may help in diet control.
