Premature ejaculation- Panchkarma management

Ayurveda does not see things in isolation. It takes a holistic view of the situation for diagnosis and treatment. Panchkarma is an integral part of  this holistic treatment  in many cases. In the treatment of premature ejaculation also Panchakarma is practiced as a primer, to give a fillip to the treatment that ensues.

Panchakarma means five types of therapeutic measures. The panchakarmas are Vamana, Virechana, Snehavasti, Kashayavasti and Nasya. Vamana is the reflex act of ejecting the contents of the stomach through the mouth, Virechana is purging, Vasti is enema. Vasti can be classified in to two forms. One is done with medicated oils(Snehavasti) and the other with medicated decoctions(kashayavasti). Nasya is inhalation of medicines through the nose. Susrutha, the father of surgery, stresses on  Rakthamoksha (blood-letting) as one of the panchakarma procedures . Panchakarma should not be administered to those below seven years and those above 80 years. Panchakarma cleanses the body and improves the digestion and metabolism. In Ayurvedic parlance it cleanses the body of Dosha (toxic materials).

Before the actual panchakarma, Purvakarma, has to be done for a period of 7 days. Snehan and Swedan are the  two procedures. They prepare Tridoshas to be receptive to the treatment. After all the five or selected therapies of panchakarma,  Paschatkarma has to be practiced which helps the body to re-establish its normal metabolism and immunity. Then follows rejuvenation therapy where specific Rasayana preparations are administered to bring back vitality. To quote one example Dr Charak of Charak Pharmaceuticals recommend Vasti for premature ejaculation along with their proprietary capsules Neo.

Ensure that the treatment is done under the supervision of a well qualified Ayurvedic physician. You will go back with a sense of renewed energy and well being.

This also brings in its wake sexual dysfunctions like loss of interest  in sex, erectile problems and premature ejaculation. This ugly spin off  can put deleterious effects on family life. Happy family life gets splintered in many cases.

A study published in the February 2007 issue of “The American Journal of Medicine” by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and the Johns Hopkins Hospital has established a direct correlation between age, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, lack of physical activity and erectile dysfunction. The researchers  report that lifestyle changes like increase of physical activity, stricter dietary control and measures for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and diabetes may prevent or decrease cases of  erectile dysfunction. These observations have relevance in the case of premature ejaculation also.

The recommended changes include reduction of saturated fat in diet , consumption of more fresh fruits and vegetables, more of  whole grains, reduction of sodium intake, and consumption of food rich in fibre. Moderation of alcohol intake is a prime need that has been stressed. The study also make a plea for quitting smoking. The role of regular exercise has been highlighted. A separate study reported that older men who ran 40 miles a week boosted their testosterone levels by 25% when compared to inactive people.

Obesity – An all round problem

Obesity, which was once viewed as the result of lack of will power, or a lifestyle “choice” – the choice to overeat and under exercise, is now being considered more appropriately by the modern world as a chronic disease, which requires effective strategies for its management.
In Ayurveda obesity is referred to as Sthaulya, in fact obesity is recorded as a disease in Charaka Samhita which is dated back as 1500 BC.  Charaka has classified obesity as medho roga.  Medas (fat) is considered to be one of the seven dhaatus (basic tissue elements that govern the body).
Obese patients have been associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality relative to those with ideal body weight.  Even modest weight reduction in the range of 5-10% of the initial body weight is associated with significant improvements in a wide range of co-morbid conditions.

Definition of Obesity
WHO used Body mass index, which is body weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared to define obesity.

Where BMI 18.5 – 24.9 is considered as normal
24.9 – 29.9 is considered as overweight
29.9 – 39.9 is considered as obese and
More than 40 are considered as morbidly obese.

In Ayurveda the functions of Medas is described as “Medaha sneha swedaudhrudatwam pushtim asthyancha”
The function of medas is to keep body moisturised, promote sweating, to store energy, and to nourish the bones.
Typical characteristics of an obese person is described as “Medo mamsativriddhatvaachalasphigudarastanaha”
There will be increase of medha and mamsa, hips, belly and breasts of obese person sag and they flap as the person move.Other symptoms mentioned in Ayurveda are the person gets tired easily, with associated wheezing, palpitation, sweating, and state of lethargy or sluggishness.

Causes of Obesity
Modern medicine attributes a person’s eating habits, level of physical activity, psychological disturbances, binge eating disorders, and some medications as cause of obesity apart from genetic predisposition.
According to Ayurveda causes of obesity are Avyayama: ie lack of physical activity or exertion, Divaswapna: day time sleeping, Shleshmala Ahara Vihara – Food and life style which increases kapha, and Madhura Ahara: over consumption of sweets. With similar diet and exercise pattern some become obese whilst others comparably don’t according to Ayurveda this can be attributed to their prakrithis, which is their doshic nature; there are 3 basic types of doshic nature vata, pitta and kapha.  Though all 3 are susceptible to develop obesity, they develop obesity in different ways.  Vata people are generally nervous, anxious and overactive by nature.  They tend to eat more when they are stressed, this inevitably leads to obesity.  One of the distinctive marker in these people are fluctuating body weight.  Pitta people very rarely become obese as they have high metabolic rate and they have good Agni ie digestive fire.  But they may develop ravening appetite leading to obesity.  The people with kapha are most vulnerable to become obese due to their nature, low metabolic rate, and tendancy to retain water.

Complications of obesity
According to Ayurveda obese people are prone to diabetes, kidney related problems, low libido, skin disease, liver ailments, hepatitis, and low energy levels.

Ayurvedic Treatments
The treatments in Ayurveda depend on the prakrithi (nature) of the person and the vikrithi ( pathology) of the disease.
Some herbs used in Obesity
Ginger (Adraka), bitter gourd (Karela), Gooseberry (Amlaki), Nut grass (Musta), false pepper(vidanga) , Belleric Myroblan (Bibhitaki), Tinospora Gulancha(Guluchi), Chebulic Myroblan (Haritaki) to name a few.

Certain Ayurvedic preparations like Trikatu, Guggulu, Shilajit, Thriphala Guggulu, Amrutaday Guggulu, Arogya Vardhini, Chandraprabha Vati, Varadi Kashayam, Ayaskriti, Lohabhasmam, Vilangadi Choornam can be used with good efficacy.
Fasting in considered beneficial but care must be taken to avoid fruit juices while fasting; replacing this with vegetable juice will be advantageous.

Taking honey with equal quantity of hot water is also advisable.

Udvartana: This is a specialized Ayurvedic herbal massage treatment for effective weight reduction.  An herbal powder prescribed by the physician is applied all over the body and deeply massaged with specific movements. Apart from weight reduction this also helps to remove cellulite and toxins from the body, and tones the skin & muscles.
It is prudent to lead a hard life, strain oneself, do exercise, avoid rich food, and get regular bowel movements.
Though these are all treatment aspects the most important thing to remember is to know what sort of person has a disease than to know what sort of disease a person has.

Diabetic neuropathy – Ayurvedic concept

Introduction

Ayurveda, a holistic way of living, and a system of medicine which  hailed from Indian sub continent is based on the theory that our individual body constitution is made up of three energies or doshas called as vata, pitta and kapha.

Virus – Ayurvedic Concept

According to Ayurveda, an age old Indian natural healing system of medicine, each individual body constitution is made up of tridoshas namely vata, pitta or kapha. Any imbalance in the doshas which is caused by improper lifestyle and diet / stress leads to attract virus towards it.

Virus, a simple submicroscopic parasites of planst and animals,  cannot multiply on their own so they invade a host cell and make more virus particles.  For example sometimes even if one stands near a person who sneezes/coughs or shake hands with people who are infected with virus they get affected by virus. But one cannot avoid contacts with others totally and the best thing is that one can work one himself to boost his own immune system and be with a robust health.

Ayurvedic medicine  is against the common belief that bacteria and viruses are the only causes of diseases. Simple ayurvedic logical reason, why only some are affected, even when all of us are exposed to them is that their immunity system is low.

To guard oneself from attacked by virus one has to have proper diet and avoid wrong eating habits as they lead to a  great disturbances in the digestive system and thereby toxins are formed, which forms a breeding place for infections. This circulates throughout the system where the fight is taking place between the invading virus and the immunity of the body. If one’s immunity system is not so strong then the virus wins.

Ayurveda insists upon a correct way of living which is tailored to suit individual body constitution by clearing the toxins, strengthens the digestive system, normalizes imbalanced doshas thereby building immunity, for which it highly  recommends the natural medicinal herbs, modified life style and dietary changes along with the yogic practice to gain the natural

j) Always eat freshly cooked warm food. Avoid alcohol and smoking, red meat etc.,
k) Avoid sleeping in afternoons, over physical and mental exertions and exposure to sunny climates.
l) Go to bed within 10 pm, as a restful sleep for atleast 7 to 8 hrs helps in building  up immunity.

Yoga helps one to be self centered. Practising Ujjayi pranayama, Nodi Shodhana, the simple basic techniques of pranayama (breathing exercises) helps one to go deep in to their inner life and gather physical and mental strength to face the viral disease like Hepatitis.

The fifth chakra exercise – Dog Breath – the  most powerful exercise of all the kundalini yoga corrects our  breathing pattern  and helps in clearing the body and throat out of the  toxins. It  also aids in oxygenating body thereby helping to get rid of the many viral diseases.

Pneumonia, a viral infection that inflicts the lungs, occurs due to collision between kapha and vita doshas  and ayurveda recommends one to practice the yoga positions like Half wheel (Ardha Chakrasaha) a dynamic backward bend  and  Bow (Dhanura Asana)  a frontal position. These asanas help in improving the functions of respiratory and digestive systems.

Common cold, a mild infection in the nose and throat by a virus,  can be prevented by doing a regular ling mudra along with the  kapalbhati pranyama (breathing technique), which results in inhaling more oxygen in to lungs thereby curing cold.

Hence  Yoga practice helps one to fight against many psychosomatic disorders/viral diseases and improves his immune system and handle the stressful situations in a more positive manner.

Viral Disease – Panchakarma

Ayurveda, an age old system of Indian medicine, firmly states that every person who is exposed to the same environment is not affected by viral diseases, hence it is the  immune system that plays an important role in attracting the virus towards him. It suggests a modified diet, lifestyle and herbal formulations along with the panchakarma treatment.

Ayurveda aims at getting rid of the indigestible toxins that attract the virus towards him.
As we are all aware, the immune system is weakened due to accumulation of ama, the toxins in our body and panchakarma therapy which involves the entire body massaging steam saunas with herbs which helps to clear out the blockages and get rid of the foreign invaders like virus out of the body.

Pizhichil, one of the preparatory method for panchakarma is used to fight the chronic fatigue syndrome which a person feels when he has just recovered from the viral diseases. In this process, the medicated oil or milk is being continuously poured on the whole body and simultaneously four therapists give a gentle massage all over the body.. This leads to rejunevation.

Panchakarma can be said to be a  scientific theory which helps in detoxifying and rejunevating the whole body. It includes Vaman (vomiting), Virechan (medicated purgation) Basti (cleaning the bowels with medicated enemas), Nasya (medication through nasal route), Rakta mokshan (blood-letting).One of these therapies may be used to treat according to the disease one has been diagonised with.

When agni  or jathar-agni (digestive fire) is disturbed due to various reasons, it results in toxins called ama which subsequently leads to indigestion, constipation etc., which are the root cause of all the body disorders including Rheumatic fever.

** Ayurvedic concept of Rheumatic fever  can be explained as below.
Ama or toxins are the unmetabolised wastes that have a heavy and sticky quality and Vata is the functional principle of movement in the body. Ama (toxins) are being carried by vata into rasadhatu. Rheumatic Fever – Panchakarma treatment

Ayurveda, an age old Indian system of medicine, emphasis that Rheumatic diseases occur due to accumulated ama accompanied by the vata dosha . Panchakarma, is a cleansing process, which is very much unique in Ayurvedic medicine and by undergoing it, the body is able to release excess doshas and amas (toxins) from the cells and it strikes at the root cause of Rheumatic fever.

Panchakarma means five therapeutic measures which are undergone for the purification of the body. The simple logic on which Ayurveda operates is that the body has to be purified before preparing it for treating it for the complex health problems.

The pre-purification measures of panchakarma are :

1.Snehana (abhyangam) – oil massage is done which helps the ama to move towards the gastro intestinal tract
2. Swedana (sweating) – a process which liquefies the toxins and increases the movement of ama towards the gastro intestinal tract.

Next comes the  main purification measures :

1. Vamana – It is a therapeutic vomiting which eliminates the kapha casuing the excess mucus.
2. Virechana – It is a purgation therapy. To treat the fever which is the result of the excess Pitta being secreted in the gall bladder, liver or small intestine.
3. Nasya – It is believed that nose is the doorway to our brain which inturn is the doorway to consiousness.  In Nasya, the excess of bodily humors especially the ones that are found in throat area, are eliminated through administration of medication through the nose.
4. Basti – It is an enema therapy where the herbal concoctions of seasame iols and other herbal preparations in the form of liquid medium are introduced in to the rectum. Janubasti is also  very effective in treating vata disorders which results in RA disorders.

Hence panchakarma treatment is found very effective in treating the rheumatic disorders and after undergoing it the  person is then advised to lead a modified lifestyle, take proper diet and do yogic exercises that helps him in keeping himself at bay from RA disorders in future too.

Rheumatic fever – Yoga

Ayurveda, a science of life, states that  Rheumatic fever occurs due to accumulated ama in combination with the aggravation of vata dosha and can be cured by its ayurvedic herbal formulations accompanied by modified diet, life style and a regular yogic practice which is tailored according to individual body constitution.

It has a good effect on the total nervous system of the body and helps one to fight Rhematic disorders.

Asanas like Pawanmuktasana encourages body to do a full range of movements and fully relaxes all the joints. It is advisable to soak the limbs in salt water before doing the asanas. Hala asana (the plough), Dhanur Asana (the bow), Ardhachakrasan (the half wheel), Prarambhik sthiti (base position), Padanguli Naman (toe bending), Ankle rotation,  Vrikshasana (Ardha Chandrasana), Shashankasana, marjari-asana, shashank bhujangasana, and akarna dhanurasana.
