Ayurveda believes that just as every human needs water and food to exist, urge for sex  is a natural biological drive and to deprive oneself out of it may throw one out of balance.

SI involves all the five senses sight, sound, smell, taste and touch and it is believed to be an elaborate process of mutual stimulation gifted to man kind by Nature. It views SI as a union of body, mind and soul  It is a more fulfilling experience and it acts as an emotional bond between husband and wife, it leads to a state where two bodies with one soul is achieved.

It firmly believes that SI is the divine process and enjoying it cautiously as well as relaxedly  leads to giving birth to a healthy offspring. Hence it emphasis that body to be pure and mind to be calm to have an effective intercourse.. How the parents feel during the intercourse too will effect the child. Hence ayurveda advises one to undergo a purification therapy that will flush out any doshic excess and result in a better sexual life.

Kapha one of the tridohas is responsible for keeping up the sexual vigour. Rasa and Shukra are among the seven tissues that help in sexual feelings.  It firmly believes that the doshic state of parents at the time of conception influences the child

By taking some aphrodisiac before entering into a SI will promote the quality and quantity of the semen and enhance the sexual enjoyment   Shukra Stambhaka are the ayuredic drugs that are used to increase the span of SI.

The reproductive tissues are the essence of all dhatus (which is tissue elements) and it has the power to create life. SI is viewed by ayurveda as not only creating new life but to bring back youthfulness to the couples. To buy medicines for eye care click here !

What is glaucoma?
It is a disease, generally associated with the pressure rise inside the eye, certain to lead to blindness if not detected in an early stage. In a normal eye the watery fluid, aqueous humor, circulates freely and excess goes out through an exit. In cases of glaucoma, the exit develops some obstruction, and it causes damage to the optic nerve.
According to ayurveda glaucoma is best correlated with a condition described as adhimantha, and is of 4 basic types: vata, pitta, kapha and rakta.
Generally speaking, vata regulates retinal nerve function, whereas kapha specifically nourishes the eye and pitta acts to drain it in context with adhimantha.
Any of these symptoms may require immediate treatment:
• Blurred vision
• Nausea
• Headaches
• Halos around bright lights
• Falling of peripheral vision
• Severe pain
TREATMENT
1) Diet rich in Vitamins and minerals is important to the eye include zinc and copper, antioxidant vitamins C, E, B and A and selenium, an antioxidant mineral. Foods such as bell peppers, broccoli, citrus fruit, brussel sprouts, guava, kale, parsley and strawberries are recommended.
2)  Limit caffeine and alcohol intake. Consume water in small amounts throughout the day.
3) Triphala is also widely taken for early stages of glaucoma and cataracts.
4) Make tea with one teaspoon of punarnava in one cup of hot water for two minutes. Strain the tea until there’s no punarnava in the water, then drink the tea two to three times a day, this helps in treating glaucoma.
5) The oil massage can reduce stress hormones, which are known to raise IOP.
6) Exposure to natural sunlight will help regulate the body’s natural cycle.
7) Going to bed early and at the same time each night will help the body.
8)  Daily exercise and meditation will definitely have effect.

Eye diseases- Ayurveda concept

EYE DISEASES
Eyes being one of the most important organs in Ayurveda, all five elements play a role in maintaining eye health. Earth (prithivi) governs the muscular part of the eye, fire (tejas) rules the blood vessels, air (vayu) governs the color, water (apu) dominates the white area, and space (akasha) controls the tear ducts and channels.According to ayurvedic studies, eye problems are caused by  upsetting of one of the three doshas namely an imbalance in vata, pitta or kapha doshas.
Improper Eye care can result in the following:
• Impaired vision (need of glasses)
• Cataracts
• Damaged Retinas
• Blindness
CAUSES
Vata disorders in the eye tend to lead to dryness, poor vision and eyestrain.
Pitta imbalances cause burning, inflammation, yellow pus, and redness.
Kapha upsetting causes clouded vision, glaucoma, cataracts, thick pus and watery eyes.
TREATMENT
Ayurvedic eye treatment varies for each problem. Few eye strengthening and purifying treatments are use of triphala eyewash, eye bright infusion and netra vasti. Cooling herbs such as roses, sandalwood, coriander leaves,  and Indian eyeliner (kajal)  also improve  vision. A drop of pure castor oil in the eyes is also healing for vata and pitta eye diseases. As shatavari is high in vitamin A and gooseberry in vitamin C these strengthen the eyes connective tissue integrity.  As per Ayurveda it is vital to protect the eyes from chemicals, overstrain, sunlight and internal toxins.  Heat too increases degeneration of the eyes connective tissue so one should avoid hot hair dryers, hot water on the face, alcohol based cosmetics around the eyes. Yogic eye exercises are indeed helpful to maintain clarity of vision. Above all a diet, rich in antioxidants such as fresh fruit and vegetables will result in strong eyes.

2) Avoid excessive drinking and smoking. It can reduce the sexual drive and desire by reducing the blood flow to the sexual organs.
3) Remain physically active. Inactivity contributes to poor cardiovascular fitness and may raise the chances of lack of desire, arousal problems, and orgasm.
4) Exercise and meditation are very helpful in solving sex related problems and helps to maintain emotional and psychological balance. Stress, anxiety, relationship problems, depression, guilt and fatigue are some of the problems, which can easily be taken care of by meditating. Regular aerobic exercise can increase stamina, improve body image and elevate your mood. Learning to relax amid the stresses of daily life can enhance your ability to focus on the sexual experience and attain better arousal and orgasm.
5) Maintaining personal hygiene is another factor, which help to overcome sexual problems. It helps to avoid various infections like chronic bladder infection, vaginal or cervical infections and can make sexual intercourse more desirable.
6) Communicate with your partner. It can enhance emotional and sexual intimacy as it can make your partner aware of your likes and dislikes. By doing so your emotional health and intimacy with your partner will improve helping you to enjoy your sexual activity.

Dental diseases Ayurvedic management

Ayurveda is a system of medicine that combines natural therapies with a personalized approach to the treatment. This form of healthcare focuses equally on the wellness of the body, mind, and spirit where an imbalance results in illness. There are three doshas, which govern the body: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The mouth is the seat of the kapha dosha, care must be taken not to vitiate it. Problems with this dosha lead to several dental problems some of which are:
Bad breath
Toothache
Bleeding gums
Yellow teeth
Tooth decay
Ayurveda suggests a wide range of herbal and dietary solutions to dental problems some of which are:
NEEM
The neem tree is a traditional remedy for white healthy teeth. Neem twigs are used as toothbrushes. Neem oils contain astringent and antiseptic properties to fight bad breath, kill microorganisms accumulated on the teeth and combat dental caries.
TURMERIC
Besides flavoring food, purify blood; dental remedy is probably the most common use of Turmeric in Ayurveda. Prepare a mixture of a quarter teaspoon of common salt with mustard oil and apply on the affected tooth. Its daily use prevents dental caries, foul breath, bleeding from the gums, painful gums, and toothaches. Burn some turmeric sticks; make a fine powder and use as toothpowder.
CLOVE
Another remedy for toothache is in the use of clove, which lessens pain. It also helps decrease infection due to its antibacterial properties. Clove oil, applied to a cavity in a decayed tooth, also reduces toothache. Use a paste of zinc oxide powder and clove oil to fill the cavity in the aching tooth, also preventing food materials from accumulating in the cavity. Peel and crush a clove of fresh garlic and mix it with peanut butter. Apply it to the aching tooth and keep it there for some time.

Vitamin C prevents decay and loosening of the teeth, dental caries, toothache, and bleeding of the gums. Take Vitamin C rich diet to fight against toothache.
Sugar from candy, cookies, softdrinks and desserts damages teeth and gums hence should be avoided.

Allergic Rhinitis- Ayurvedic concept

Introduction of Allergic rhinitis

It is quite common in spring to see people sneezing. Allergic rhinitis commonly known as Hay fever is in full swing and you feel the urge to rub your nose, eyes and ears. Throat is constantly sore and itchy.  This is all due to immune response to airborne pollens of different plants and flowers. In Ayurveda a disease is a state of imbalance in the three doshas present in the human body namely vata, pita and kapha. Allergic rhinitis is also, one of those diseases. The most common cause of allergies is pollens of the grass, trees, weeds and molds. Rhinitis could range from mild nasal congestion to skin rashes.  It can be extremely infectious, as in the case of the common cold and non-infectious when it comes to seasonal and allergies.

Signs and symptoms of Allergic rhinitis

The symptoms of vataja prathisyaya (Ayurvedic name for Rhinitis) are: Nasanaha is nothing but nose block, Kaphasruti is running nose, rhinorrhoea and Kshava is sneezing.  Sneezing may include paroxysms of 10-20 sneezes. Rhino rhea is profuse, thin and watery. Headaches and earache may accompany nasal congestion and prolonged congestion may lead to alteration or loss of smell and taste.  The treatment for allergic rhinitis involves anti-histamines, decongestants and immunotherapy. The line of treatment in ayurveda is nasya, dhoomapana, shamana. Drugs like lakshmivilas ras, panchamrutha.

Ayurvedic approach on Allergic rhinitis

Certain foods are more mucous producing and Ayurvedic medicine recognizes those foods as Kapha foods. Dairy, wheat, sugar, night shade family like potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers, peppers, and bananas, oranges, tangerines, grapefruits all are considered Kapha foods, thus aggravating allergies.

Diet rich in lots of fruits and vegetable of different colors are recommended, as they provide photochemical, which reduce susceptibility to allergies. Neti is nasal douching with salt and baking soda of the nasal passages, which helps soothe the irritated mucous membranes. Ayurvedic herbs like Guggul, Shilajeet, Amla and Pippli also help tremendously. Shilajeet is a mineral pitch that helps boost the immune system.

Diet and lifestyle for Allergic rhinitis

Allergic rhinitis is used to describe an inflammation of the lining of the nose caused by an allergy. The symptoms include a ‘runny’ nose and sneezing, nose, roof of the mouth, and the ears, may be itchy.

Ayurveda believes in three doshas, which are vata, pitta, and kapha, an imbalance in which results in a disease.   Ayurveda has the faith that allergy or Sheetpitta is variety of unwholesome condition of pitta. In this condition the pitta loses its natural warmth. It can occur when you eat spices or hot food, drink caffeine, or are exposed to irritant chemicals, such as tobacco smoke or perfume. It also occurs due to airborne allergens, such as pollen of all types, house-dust mites and their faeces, mould spores, animal dander and feather and household sprays.

Allergic rhinitis can best be taken care of by taking certain dietary and lifestyle precautions. Some of them are:

  • · Certain foods are more mucous producing and Ayurvedic medicine recognizes those foods as Kapha foods thus aggravating allergies like dairy, wheat, sugar, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, bananas, oranges, and grapefruits. Food additives like artificial dyes and different preservatives also play major factors
  •  Home environment such as forced air, gas heat, pets and carpet which harbors dust mites, molds, bacteria along with many chemicals are certainly aggravating factors.
  • Dry grains like chickpeas, kala channa, corn, fish like salmon, trout, cod are better choices. Tea with cardamom, pepper and ginger, lemon juice and honey work effectively. Diet rich in lots of fruits and vegetable of different colors are recommended.
  •  Carpets are one of the major contributors to allergies as they breed dust mites. The best choice is to remove the carpet, which eliminates the area for the dust mites to breed also use pillows with micro fiber.
  • Yoga -The Sheetpitta of respiratory system like Rhinitis can be cured by the regular practice of certain type of Pranayamas like Bhastrika, ujjai.
  • Panchakarma-Vaman (the emesis therapy) and Virechan therapy (the laxatives therapy) are very effective to detoxify the body.

Ayurvedic medicines for Allergic rhinitis

Allergic Rhinitis from an Ayurvedic perspective is due to the toxins present in the body (ama) and due to the low immunity. Ama aggravates the levels of Pitta or Kapha in the body, giving rise to different symptoms of allergies. Allergic rhinitis is characterized by excessive sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and throat irritation, nasal congestion accompanied by headaches and earaches and loss of smell or taste. It is common during early summer and spring when the plants are flowering or producing pollens. Ayurveda considers this as a Kapha-Pitta disorder.

Ayurveda believes in balancing the three doshas present in the human body thus treating the disease on the whole. Therefore it suggests the following approaches to get rid of allergic rhinitis:
1. A slice of ginger, pepper and cardamom can be added while preparing tea. Dried ginger can be also added to coffee without milk and taken.
2. Mix honey with half the amount of lemon juice and take the mixture early in the morning for few weeks.
3. Take two spoons of Apple cider vinegar and a bit of honey to a glass of cooled boiled water and take it early in the morning.
4. Have a diet rich in vitamin C and vitamin B.
5. Take chamommile tea twice a day.
6. Take one cup of Indian gooseberry and mix with two tsp of honey. Have it twice a day.
7. Pouring two to three drops of coconut oil into the nostrils at bedtime could provide relief.
8. Ayurvedic treatment procedure involves inducing therapeutic vomiting which helps in balancing Kapha.
9. Herbs like santalum, cardamom and licorice can be boiled in water (ratio 1:4) and reduced to quarter of the quantity. Drinking this often will help in preventing the aggravation of Pitta dosha.
10. Taking two tablets of guduchi thrice a day or consuming tea made of camphor, cloves and basil for about two weeks will help prevent the aggravation of Kapha.
11. Consuming herbs like Evening Primrose, nettle and Butterbur are also useful in treating allergic rhinitis.

It believes that all of life are combinations of three energy-elements (doshas) – air (Vata), fire (Pitta), and water (Kapha). Imbalance of these doshas leads of illness and ayurveda treats each individual as a unique makeup of the three doshas and suggest cleansing process (panchakarma)  specific lifestyle, nutritional guidelines, yoga, herbal supplement, to assist the individual in restoring the balance of  the doshas

There are many commonalities in Ayurveda and Yoga, to mention few
a) Both are ancient Vedic teachings. Yoga originates in the Yajur Veda, while Ayurveda originates in the Atharva Veda and Rig Veda.
b) Both recognize that keeping the body healthy is important for fulfilling the four aims of life: Dharma (duty), Artha (wealth), Kama (desire), and Moksha (liberation).
c) Both recognize that the balance of doshas (humors), dhatus (tissues), and malas (waste products) is essential for maintaining good health.
d) They share virtually the same metaphysical anatomy and physiology, which consists of 72,000 nadis (subtle channels), 7 main chakras (energy centers), 5 bodily sheaths, and the Kundalini Shakti (energy).
e) Both advocate the use of diet, herbs, asana, pranayama, meditation, mantra, astrology, prayer, puja, and rituals for healing the entire being.
f) Both encourage physical health as a good foundation for mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
g) Both share the same view on psychology. They both understand that the attachment to the body-mind complex is the root cause of all suffering and that the ultimate state of health is experienced when we abide in our true nature, which is total peace, regardless of the state of the physical body.
h) Both use cleansing methods for the body, all of which encourage the removal of waste products and toxins through their natural routes of elimination.Ayurveda has panchakarma (five cleansing actions) and yoga uses Shat Karma (six purification measures)
i) Ayurveda and Yoga both emphasize cleansing of the body for health and support of spiritual practices. Their methods are similar and work by expelling excess dosha and ama, or toxins, using the body’s natural routes of elimination.

Modern yoga practitioners would most certainly benefit from a basic knowledge of Ayurveda to help establish a healthy daily routine and adjust their practice according to the constitution, dosha imbalance, season to prevent disease and promote longevity.

In a Nutshell – Yoga is part of Ayurveda. Yoga is important for dissolving physical stress and calming the mind before meditation, and is the ideal ayurvedic exercise, because it rejuvenates the body, improves digestion, and removes stress.Ayurveda is part of Yoga , At the same time, yoga practitioners can benefit from the ayurvedic daily routine as part of their yoga practice. For instance, abhyanga (ayurvedic massage) helps remove toxins from the body and relaxes the muscles for yoga practice.

And it is obvious that Ayurveda and Yoga  share similarities and fundamental principles on many levels and should be practiced in a combined manner  to achieve optimal health, peace and to develop the capacity to love and accept all as Divine.
